What is actually in the UK planning data

Planning data is public, but it is published by each council separately, in different formats, with different field names and different levels of completeness. PlanWire normalises all of it into one shape so a query written for one council works for every other one.

Coverage and history

13.8 million planning applications from 481 councils, with 375 monitored source records checked continuously against the 382 official UK local planning authorities. The oldest record in the dataset dates from 1979, so you can look at a site's planning history rather than only what was submitted this month.

Fields on every record

Reference, address, description, council, application type, status, received and validated dates, decision and decision date where the council has issued one, and a link back to the council's own page for the record. Coordinates are present where the source publishes them, which is what makes radius and postcode search possible.

How freshness is verified

Every source is health-checked on a schedule, and the newest application each council has published is compared against the newest record held. That comparison is published on the coverage page as source parity, so you can see whether the data matches the councils rather than taking a freshness claim on trust. A council that publishes nothing for a fortnight is quiet, not missing, and the two are reported differently.

Where the data comes from

Direct council planning portals and official public datasets. Every record carries its source link, so an application can be traced back to the authority that published it — which matters when planning data feeds a decision someone has to justify.
